Check out "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. The author served as a soldier in WWI and this novel is largely based on his personal experience as it follows a group of young German men before they eagerly join the war to their war experiences and then disillusionment with the war. If you don't have time to find/read the novel, it was turned into a movie during the 1930's (I remember watching it in World History class in high school about 20 years ago). and I believe it won best picture. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but it should be of interest to you and the novel- and the links below- may direct you to additional references/info.

I also believe the sparksnote link has a message board to post questions r/e WWI and lists other books that may be helpful to you; beware of pop-up ads for one of the sites too.
