Mercedes C280 1996 car battery vent tube??

I was replacing my car battery and I accidentally pulled the vent tube. It went somewhere from the battery to under plastic cover in the trunk but I couldn't find where. Does anybody know what and where it connects to?

It goes through the hole in the trunk floor and just hangs out in the wind under the car.
