The "on/off" switch turns the TV on and off. When you buy the TV it is off. You must plug it into an electrical socket before you can turn it on. Alternatively you can use the "power" or "on/off" switch on the TV's remote. Make sure you put fresh batteries in first and note the direction the batteries should face.

Just in case you dont have a remote.Give your tv a break and switch it off once a week at the switch.

Ha ha! Actually if you use it to turn the tv off standby, it saves electricity. I gather that a TV uses 80% of the power that is uses when switched on, when on standby. The same applies to computer monitors too.
I always switch both off standby when not in use.

The on/off switch is going to be generally for turning your tv on. Sometimes.. you will use it to turn it off.
