I don't know the meaning of it but I know back in the late 80's and 90's it was the best and better than the crap they play now, back then it meant something and now anyone can have their voices changed with audio equipment, and anyone can scream into a microphone. But also back then metal was like, Ozzy and G-N-R, Metallica, Skid Row, Twisted Sister, Posion, Def Lepord, all the great ones.

OK , I'm OLD... but rock used to mean a heavy beat, and a lot of fingering on the guitar. Rock embraced a wide range of music - from the early Stones (more blues than 'rock') and Pink Floyd (almost symphonic - check out King Crimson) but an early set on that ill-defined genre might be undestood by listening to some Ronnie Montrose albums (Jump On It). Ted Nugent. BUT THEN...
Queen came along. Still rock, but far more orchestral. Pink Floyd had been doing it for years (my wife still calls them the 'stoners band'). KISS forged the way for metal, they took what Montrose did and kicked it up a notch or three. Ten years later 'death metal' followed, a.k.a. "i don't know how to play but if it's fast and loud enough plug your ears, climb under your chairs, and you might live... I used to play with a band called NetherWitch. We did Deep Purple and Hendrix cover tunes. Paid the beer bills. Rock evolved from Country music, and country has its roots in the blues. Everything just sort of got a lot louder and faster...
As for rap - well - make it political, and make a point, I turn it off when they just 'wanna kill dat b*tch, beat dat 'ho' - why is this "music" so popular? Inner city, kiss my butt. I just wanna rock.

Metal and Rock are AWESOME!!!! Well as you know they are completely different. Metal is made for you anger. It is to release steam and well at times darker lyrics and a lot alot of guitar. Rock is more of a mellow tune a lot of singing and at times romantic, sad, happy or neutral lyrics. Some nu-metal have kept the sound of 80's guitar. As for rock it is a bit more passive than metal.

Ugh! Those of my two least favorite types of music. I just don't understand them. Usually both lyrically and musically..if you want to call it music...
