Breakdance, also known as breaking or b-boying, is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement that originated among African American youths in the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It is arguably the best known of all hip hop dance styles.
Breakdancing is one of the four elements of hip hop, the others being MCing, DJing, and graffiti.

Breaking means 'Breakdancing.' This is an improvisational dance form which was done as a street performance to old-school hip-hop.
The word is derived from the musical term 'Break.'
This is because turntablists try to find vinyl with good 'break' sections to 'scratch.' These are instrumental portions with no vocals that are interposed between the chorus and verse of traditional popular songs. They typically consist of just the drums and bass and possibly some guitar parts.

It's a type of dance that really started to become big in the 80's. It is when you move each individual part of your body as if you were breaking it in half. When done correctly and with some style it is absolutely amazing to watch.
