Yes, hamsters get stressed with nothing to do cuasing Wet Tail which is a deadly desise. They can also be stressed if thier cage is too small or have nothing to do. a paper towel roll, a dog treat with no garlic, toys, a wheel, will all keep your hamster bust for hours and hours. Hamsters are nocturnal so all this would happen at night.
Hamsters have bad eyesight, but they have a strong sense of smell. They can recongnise the smell of you. They can also hear well. They can recognise the tones and sound of your voice.
Hamsters are very inteligent to me.

yes they can. by smell and sound. since their eyesight is poor, that way is doubtful. the special call would be their name. it's a good idea to use their name everytime u drop by the cage, every time u feed, anytime u communicate with them use their name. if they ever get out often they will come to u when u call because they will associate u with good things like food. they can get bored and often do when their cage is too small & they arent given time in a hamster ball---time being an hour or more, not 10 minutes. both of mine do around 3 hrs with breaks every 1/2 to 1 hr for water. they chew on the bars when they want back out. people dont realize thats what bar chewing means. the happeir the hamster, the longer the life. stress shortens anyone's life. they do have preferences for some people and will react differently to different people. if it's syrian do not get another and cage them together as they r solitary animals. that's only for dwarfs.

I think they can recognize their owners! They remember their owners sense of smell!
Hamsters can not die from boredom, they are very active creatures! But you can put many toys around the cage so they wont get bored.

I read somewhere that they can recognize different voices. I think they are also able to recognize different people by smell, I used have hamsters that would bite or pee on strangers. It was pretty funny. :)

If you have only one hamster you should get another so he/she has a friend. They get lonely by themselves. I also believe they recognize their owner. I baby sat two for a friend, and they got all excited when she returned for them. :)

All of ours recognize both me and my husband, though they definetly prefer me. Several will come up to him, but won't climb in his hand.
We have one particular one, our favorite, who see's or hear's us, and runs to the cage door. She climbs up it and just waits for us to open the door. She'll climb into both of our hands, no problem.
And no, there is no special hamster call.

My daughter's hamsters would come to her, but run from my nephews...When she put them in the big clear plastic ball, they would roll to where she was, but not the rest of the family, unless she wasn't home..

I don't think they have enough brains to comprehend boredom or faces.
