Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the leveraging of technology or specialist process vendors to provide and manage an organisation's critical and/or non-critical enterprise processes and applications. The most common examples of BPO are call centres, human resources, accounting and payroll outsourcing. Business process outsourcing may involve the use of off-shore resources.

Use of a BPO as opposed to an application service provider (ASP) usually also means that a certain amount of risk is transferred to the company that is running the process elements on behalf of the outsourcer. BPO includes the software, the process management, and the people to operate the service, while a typical ASP model includes only the provision of access to functionalities and features provided or 'served up' through the use of software, usually via web browser to the customer.

The abbreviation BPO is all ready known to you.
This idea when explained in lay man terms it simply means that " Using some one Else's shoulder to fire your gun "
It all started when companies started downsizing their man power strength.
During the process they realised that there are certain areas which they can not afford.
Let me give u a simple example . Just consider the functioning of House keeping dept in a company.
This is one thing a company can not ignore at the same time this is one area where the the man power is mostly illiterates where discipline is lacking & because of which absentism is uncontrolable and the end result is stinking toilets.
So how do you come out of this mess.
EASY
Ask some one else to hold the bucket and pay him little more than what he normally expects so that you can kick his *^%#@ when he does not do the work properly.
During our grand father's days this process was simply called " sub contracting "
So now u have understood that BPO is nothing but glorified version of sub contracting.

BPO is Business Process Outsourcing

if u say in detail..
If any company do not want to spend a lot of money and take the head ache of employee management and benefits, they give their work to other companies who can do their job at the secondary company's premises. This could save a lot of expenses in management costs, infrastructure costs, hiring and firing costs, etc.

Some companies use this for saving costs...some for saving management efforts on things which is not there primary business --- like a hospital gives medical transcription work to a contractor as transcription is not their primary business and if they want to do it themselves, they need to invest a lot on something which is not in their business objective.

It is a misconception that BPO is call-center. It is not just call centers which is a BPO, but can be anything which is given to (outsourced to) a third party company by the parent company, to save expenses and or overheads. Accounting, law consultancy, pay-roll managment, software developement, network management, hiring and recruitment,.. the list is endless..

BPO stands for Business Process Outsourcing.

The simple word for this the Call Centre business. Rather than keeping your own employee, outsourse this to someone running a call centre which results in much lower cost.
