Ok I am changing my wording a little I am in China but I live In CAN, If I find a phone I need to be able to tell if it is unlocked prior to buying it IE there will be no phone service as it wont be hooked up. Is there a screen somewhere that will tell you the phones status?

The unlock phone will accept any GSM SIM and it will allow you to call and receive calls. The locked phone will display a message "Invalid SIM".

It depends on the model of phone you buy, dual band which doesn't work in few countries, Tri-band usually works in almost all countries.

He's right, but, you can buy unlock kits. Be careful because sometimes the company will REFUSE to unlock a phone based on legalities.

that means you can use any SIM cards with your handset that you'd bought in your country, mine too.
