No permanent hard drive storage is used for video (webcam) chatting via most instant messengers, such as Yahoo Messenger.

To understand why this is, you must understand that the video from most instant messengers is in a form called “streaming video”. Streaming video does not use any permanent storage because the video is sent from the other party’s computer and directly displayed on yours; this results in no saved files as it is a direct transfer to viewing operation.

However, some instant messaging programs do streaming video temporally within a “temp” folder on the hard drive. These temporary files are usually deleted when you close down the instant messenger and don’t pose a storage issue unless your computer is really low on hard drive storage.

So, all you really need for IM video chatting is a high speed Internet connection, a webcam, and a IM program that supports video chatting.
