Always put your flag around the outside, preferably in the back row, and surround it with bombs. Keep a Sergeant or Lieutenant back there to defend against enemy Miners, as well as a Colonel or Major to defend against middle-ranked Miner escorts.

Put a decoy "flag" (I usually use a Colonel) elsewhere in your back row, surrounded by bombs. When your opponent breaks through there, he'll be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Keep your Scouts up front, where you can use their long-range movement power to best advantage.

Keep your Spy and Miners toward the back, as they're very valuable. You don't want your opponent getting an open long-range shot at your Spy with his Scouts.
