372 in in 1997 would be his highest official average...Gwynn did hit 394 in 1994 but, it was a strike season, he didn't have the necessary 502 TPA(27 AB short) ....IMHO his best season was 1987,he could steal a base(run) then and his defense was much better than in 97...

1987 -
BA-370 OB%-447 SLG-511 OPS-958 SB-56 CS-12 TCPG-2.03
1997 -
BA-372 OB%-409 SLG-547 OPS-956 SB-12 CS-5 TCPG-1.61

As a major leaguer, Tony Gwynn of the Padres hit .394 in 1994. With 8 batting titles, he's a lock for first round Hall of Fame election.

(Or do you mean the Tony Gwynn who's just started playing for the Brewers? He was hitting .500 (8 for 16) last time I looked.)

Being a HUGE Padres fan I can tell you that Gwynn's highest batting average came in 1994 when he batted .394 for San Diego.

I think his best season overall was in 1997 when he batted for a solid .372 tagged 17 home runs and had 119 runs batted in.

He is tied for 14th for the highest career batting average at .338, and 18th in career hits with 3141.

While he is a sure hall of fame member something tells me he will not get in on the first ballot - which will be a shame. If he played anywhere but San Diego I think it would be a first ballot for him.

Tony Gwynn's average, the one who plays for Brewers now, is .500. But he hasn't been playing much so far in this season...

honestly, even as it comprises "correct of all circumstances," and also you're speaking strictly "numbers," you may't comprise Jackie Robinson, because the guy basically did no longer have any of them. To me, the right hitter of all time replaced into Babe Ruth. in this era, Gwynn may be the proper yet surely no longer of all time. besides, how will you're saying that Cobb did not play hostile to the proper, and Gwynn did. in my view, i imagine the more desirable gamers are already retired, and many of the adult men in the present day can't even initiate to evaluate to the gamers of yesteryear (pre Nineteen Seventies it is).

I don't know his highest batting average, but I know the guy sits around his house eating twinkies and watching videos of himself hitting.
