I learnt the other day to my absolute disgust that cutting a wedding cake symbolizes the breaking of the brides hymen, (like that hasn't happened yet, cough cough) So maybe smearing the cake all over each others face represents all the head that the bride recieves later on that night. YEEEEHAAHHHHH

I didn't get cake smeared on my face. I told my husband unless he wanted to go head first into the rest of the cake to nicely feed me the cake.

There is no known folkloristic reason that newly married couples smear each other face with splendid cake. And they no need one either, many have the preference since it be your happy day and get crazzzy.

there is no reason.....feeding each other cake is a tradition., Then someone did the smearing thing.........and people thought it was funny. Now, it seems that every couple does it. Why.......Just becsuse it has become a tradition for really no reason at all.

because the traditional wedding cake tastes gross, so to look like they are enjoying it they smear it all over each others faces!! Plus it looks really fun!!

It's called passive aggressive + it's about control. The "who wears the pants in the family" thing. Naturally, the other has to retaliate...

As for tradition, most humans are followers & perhaps are egged on by others beforehand?

it's a tradition (I suppose) of the red necks who think they look to good in a tux and a wedding dress so they have to mess it up before they turn it in (the bride too)

I think it's just something funny to do to get a cheap laugh at a wedding... at mine we didn't even try but my wife had a piece of cake pinched between her thumb and index finger and she had frosting on her ring finger.... when she fed me the cake we didn't think anything of it until about 10 minutes later when someone finally asked "what's that on your ear?"

immaturity and a lack of respect... My friends and I did an
informal survey and found that those that did the cake
smearing at their wedding have a higher rate of divorce than
those that treated their partners with respect.

Because they are both so bereft of imigination to think of anything else to do. This explains the high divorce rate among "cake smearers". They bore each other to death.
