4 GCSE passes or equivalent qualifications including: BTEC First Certificate in Science, or Intermediate GNVQ in Science, or NVQ Level 2 in Science, or recognised equivalent overseas qualifications.

The course is continuously assessed in both theory and practice by a variety of methods including examinations, coursework, report writing and practical observation.

Course aims
These courses are designed for technicians who have recently entered the leather and allied industries. The courses aim to provide students with a sound understanding of the principles of leather making related technology and science. They will introduce students to the different properties of materials and manufacturing methods involved in leather making and also develop the confidence in the application of these principles to the identification and solution of problems in leather technology.
These courses introduce the student to technologies and skills which will enhance competence and broaden understanding of the industry including commerce and business.

Course content
The courses are designed to bring the student's level of chemistry and other sciences to A-Level standard in areas relevant to the study of Materials Technology (Leather), while establishing the basic theory and practice of leather manufacture.
They offer flexible career progression pathways as a technical training course for leather technicians and students can either progress to higher education in the UK or enter leather and allied industries as a technician.
The courses have a balanced teaching of science subjects (Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) and Leather Technology and a balanced theory and practical content. The University has its own tannery where students can make leathers, and extensive laboratory facilities.
On completion, students can apply to become Associates of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists (ASLTC) which can lead to Fellowship of the Society (FSLTC).

Career opportunities

Successful students from these courses can proceed to the BSc (Hons) Materials Technology (Leather) course at The University of Northampton.
