As soon as I read this I thought....our society says people are overweight. Other countries and other centuries women were full figured.....oops there is another phrase. What I am trying to say it is a subjective thing -the fat issue.
People are mean becasue I think they fear anything they can't control. Also they are mean because our society keeps telling us it is good to be thin. Personally I think thin is sickly looking. I vote for changing the definations of weight and how people judge other's weight.
I think it so sick that so many famous women have profound eating issues.....we get hit daily in the media if they lose or gain a pound. Who really cares????????? Way too much is put on weight. Many families are just genetically heavier. And meanwhile there are people literally dying to be thin.
You ask a good question. I wish I knew the answer.

Blame the advertising industry because they are the ones who portray the slim and slender people as the ideal image of the modern society. Products like dietary pills & exercise machines are generally targetted to people who are fat or think that they are fat with an intention of after using the products, they can attract people, put on nice clothes, look nice and etc. What will the vision be if supermodels are the fat ones? It is simply about consumerism, we are taught that being overweight is wrong and ugly.

Because most people are inconsiderate jack-asses. They don't consider the possibility of something being medically wrong. They just assume that the person is overweight because they eat too much. They think that by making fun of them that they're helping the person to see that they're overweight and need to go on a diet.
*Sarcasm* And as we all know, overweight people have no feelings to hurt.

Perhaps they see overweight people as someone who would not take care of themselves? We have an executive chef who is really obese but I never mentioned about anything unusal regarding his weight nor even stared at his big belly. I would rather concentrate on his other good traits....
Generally, people look also at the outward appearance rather than the heart and the character of a person.

Do you judge a book by it's cover? Do you refuse to listen to a CD because of the art work? Do you refuse to go into an Art museum because it might have a painting you won't like?
Who are we to judge someone else based on color, weight, height or the type of jeans that cover their behinds. Have you "walked a mile" in their life?
Those who are ready to pass judgment are narrow minded and I challenge them to reach out. You may find that person is smart, beautiful, caring, and the best, truest friend you have ever had.
Today people have seemed to forget compassion, empathy, and just plain old good MANNERS.

because they don't understand and don't care to. They think that people who are overweight have no control and no desire to look differently. Its easy for them to point fingers and say, go on a diet, exercise! When that is what works for them very easily. Sometimes those who are overweight are stuck in the cycle because of the people who seem to think it's just laziness, it gets them down and they turn to comfort themselves with food. Don't worry about the mean idiots out there, they are just as unhappy skinny as they think big people are heavy. Screw them

Herditary? As in eating too many greasy hamburgers from cow herds? Or did you mean hereditary?
For a few it is genetic, but for most, that argument is a cop out to evade responsibility. Only a tiny fraction of those overweight are due to genetic causes; the rest of the overweight are, to put it mildly, irresponsible.
You'll also have to define being "mean". If you are talking about people being the victim of insults, snickers, abuse, taunting, or assaults, then yes, I'd agree. But the majority of the time, those being accused of "abuse" aren't doing that.
Refusing to build bigger furniture, bigger cars, bigger doors on building is not abuse (some people have sued others for refusing to do such things). Refusing to hire someone who chooses to be unhealthy, especially when it is employers who must pay for medical care, is being prudent, not prejudiced. Choosing not to associate or be friends with people who are not physically capable of doing certain things (eg. corpulent people who cannot play sports) is not discrimination.
All major evolutionary change takes 10,000 years. (Read Richard Dawkins and Steven Jay Gould if you're uninformed about it.) Human civilization is 8,000 years old, agriculture and surplus food only 6,000 years, the enlightenment and growth of knowledge only 500, industrialized society only 200, and the modern diet of junk and processed food only 50 years old.
Humans are built for 10,000 years ago, a time when there were no domesticated animals and no farming: we were nomadic gatherer-hunters. We are built for a time when there was no fat in the diet and we are built to crave fat, to store it. Today fat is everywhere in food, and we still crave it. Our bodies haven't changed, but our diet has.
People are smart enough to know better yet they choose not to do better. If people choose to eat garbage and not exercise, they cannot complain about their health being a "disease" or a "disability"; such people chose to be that way and should take responsibility.
What's worse is that many obese people who hear that take it as an attack rather than a statement of facts. Where in those paragraphs did I insult, abuse, or deride people? Answer: I didn't, but it's easier to call my words "bigoted" than it is to take responsibility for one's own actions, for choosing to live an unhealthy life.
I feel about as much empathy for the overweight as I do for people who refuse to wear seat belts in a car and have an accident. People who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and their own lives should not expect others to compensate them for their mistakes.
