I think because it either gets too hot or the water sprays at too great a force. I had some colored plastic tumblers which I accidentally put into the dishwasher and they came out with hundreds of tiny cracks all over them. Make sure you check for "dishwasher safe" labels.

Certain things will melt if you put them in the bottom of the dishwasher. That's why some things safe top rack dishwasher safe. It's just for more sensitive items.

a normal dishwasher that you most likely would be using, but maybe not, sorts out dishes by size and shape, making it easier to sort out and put in your cabinets or wherever you put your dishes a lot easier for the sake of your convienence. picture a dishwasher that just had it where you could CRAM it in everywhere. You would have 5 dishes break everyday just UNLOADING them, god forbid you dare put them back in there if its not sorted in the first place.

Because the heating element is in the bottom directly under the rack, and lower quality plastics will melt or warp if they are that close to it. The top rack lifts them up and extra foot or so from the element, just enough to withstand the heat and prevent damage.

the dish gnomes like a little elbow room and if you put dishes that are too big in the bottom where the gnomes stand they break them.

Maybe because they are too tall, or too big, or maybe you aren't putting them in the dishwasher.
