In the mummy, the body is embalmed or treated for burial with preservatives after the manner of the ancient Egyptians. The process varied from age to age in Egypt, but it always involved removing the internal organs (though in a late period they were replaced, after treatment), treating the body with resin, and wrapping it in linen bandages. (See embalming.) Among the many other peoples who practiced mummification were the people living along the Torres Strait, between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and the Incas of South America.
There was a widespread belief that Egyptian mummies were prepared with bitumen (the word comes from the Arabic mumiyah, “bitumen”), which was supposed to have medicinal value. Throughout the Middle Ages “mummy,” made by pounding mummified bodies, was a standard product of apothecary shops. In course of time it was forgotten that the virtue of mummy lay in the bitumen, and spurious “mummy” was made from the bodies of felons and suicides. The traffic in mummy continued in Europe until the 18th century.

1. The body will be washed with palm wine and water from the Nile. An incision was made in the left side of his abdomen, and his lungs and other organs were removed. Then the brain was removed through his nostrils.
2. The liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines were washed and packed in natron (a kind of salt). The heart will not be removed. It is considered as the centre for intelligence.
3. Then the body is covered with natron for forty days to remove the complete moisture. After it is dried, the body will be washed and fragrant oil will be applied. Then the body will be stuffed with herbs, saw dust, and spices to give lively appearance.
4. Then the wrapping takes place. First the head and neck will be wrapped with stripes of fine linen. secondly, the fingers and toes are meticulous wrapped.
5. The wrapped mummy was covered with golden masks. Then it is placed inside coffins. The first one will be placed inside the second and the second one will be placed inside the third one.
6. Then the coffins will be placed in sarcophagus as tombs.

Mummification was done to preserve the lives of those who were rich, famous, and important for the afterlife. Their insides such as the brain (through the nose) and other organs were taken out to prevent rot. The bodies were dipped in formaldehyde and then put into a sarcophagus with a description of who they were. Sometimes their cats or Ravens were mummified with them. The important people had pyramids built for them during their lives.

The internal organs were extracted and preserved in canopic jars.
The remaining parts of the body were packed in natron, a salt-like chemical, to remove all of the moisture.
Then the body was wrapped in linen and sealed in a sarcophagus.
