we have two wires that are coming out of the back of it and no idea where to hook them up, we've wired it several times differently and we end up either having power to the plug but not the switch, power to the plug and the lights wont turn off, or just no power at all to the switch. We've come to a loss and need help.

Like another said, it isn't clear from your question exactly what your situation is, and so I would ignore anyone else giving precise instructions. Maybe you can give a better description, but I suspect this is a job that is over your head. Trying different wiring and stopping when it "works" is a very bad idea, since working and safe are very different things. Electrical code requirements are about safety, and very few DIYs know anything about them. DIYs get away with it for simple jobs, if they have a knowledge of the basics. But you seem to be lacking that, so I strongly suggest you get an electrician to do this work.

Do you mean that you have a switch and a GFCI receptacle in the same box?
Is it a two gang box (made to hold two device yokes)?

You may have to ``pigtail´´ the wires to feed both devices separately.
(wire nut two ≈6" pieces of wire to one to `Y' or tee it)

Your question is not clear to me.

GFI's for the kitchen or bathroom are very hard for someone not used to them.

#1 follow the directions on the box. All GFI's are different!!!!

#2 Get wire testers. For the GFI to work, it should show 120 for all 4 connections.

#3 All GFI brands tend to be different. There is no way of telling you, without looking at it, what wire goes where, except the ground wire.

Connect 2 6 in. black pigtails to your black wire in the box, one pigtail goes to the bottom screw on your switch, the other goes to the brass colored screw on the recept.,if the screws are the same color on recept. put it on the one on the same side as the smallest slot on the face of the recept.,white goes to the other screw, green to ground screw, run from top screw on switch to your light (hot), if you don't already have a white wire to the light pigtail to the white in the box and take it to the light. All this is to be done with the power off!
