A crash in computing is a condition where a program (either an application or part of the operating system) stops performing its expected function and also stops responding to other parts of the system. Often the offending program may simply appear to freeze. If this program is a critical part of the operating system kernel the entire computer may crash (a system crash).

Hard drive crash is a rare phenomenon, mechanical or physical damages to drives can be of improper power flow or manufacturing damage. Logical drives error many happen in case of improper partition and operating system installation. You can also check corrupt system files and unnecessary registry entries. Sometimes adware, malware or spyware maly also damage your hard drive and make your pc crash.

Check the following:
1. Know Your Computer: Before seeking any external help and while you are faring well, keep a copy of your system configuration information. Just run SYSEDIT and put the resultant text data in a file. Better print it and a keep a hard copy with you. Which you may require at bad times.

2. Keep a bootable disk: Better a make a bootable CD (floppy is unreliable). It will help you greatly in data recovery and OS re-installation if your PC crashes. You can make a boot disk from Add/Remove Programs of your Windows control panel.

3. Keep the hard drives tuned: Restore the lost files and lock the bad clusters while you can. File system in Windows requires defragmentation. Run defragmentation, at least once in a month. Linux OS does not require defrag.

4. Don't the make the storage fat and obese: Besides organizing your folders/files, don't stack excess bulky data in the hard drive. You can keep a dump of your OS and some documents and/or programs. Clean sweep the disks and drives of unnecessary files by a paid utility.

5. Keep back up: Keep back up of the important data.

6. Ward off viruses: Though out the net viruses intrude via emails. Setup a virus-proof mail application.

7. Don't tamper the OS and Program Files: Renaming the system files, adding components when you don't know well about those is harmful. Don't install lot of tiny utilities.

8. Use advanced/up-to-date drivers: Use up-to-date drivers for your devices.

9. Compare PC hardware and software resources: Advanced software and Windows OS are productive if you have a power PC. For old and sluggish computers you can well use a minimalist Linux OS or any Live OS CDs.

10. Shutdown properly: Don't switch off your PC like you do with other gadgets. Let your PC close the applications and restore the settings before your switch it off.

When you find the condition critical enough, then please don't go further, make a call to ServerPlex Onsite Services for to restore your PC resources and the network.

You dont specify when it crashes and that would help, computers crash for a number of reasons, if you are using win 95 or 98 these are both prone to crashes, reformating the hard drive will usually cure the problem, upgrading to win XP will fix the problem too. Of course you may have a virus or similar, the above will also fix that too. It could be that some component is failing or overheating, look inside the box and see how much dirt is inside, blowing it out will clean it, check all the fans are working while you are at it if not replace them. If you reformat make sure you install an antivirus program and keep it updated.

1) Keep your Operating up-to-date with all patches and updates and service packs, if any, applied 2) Use only licensed software or those from a trustworthy source. Many free software come with ad-wares, spy wares etc 3) Use a good anti-virus software (For Microsoft, I will suggest Microsoft Security Essentials) and keep it frequently updated. 4) Be cautious while browsing 5) Don't download and open email attachments from unknown people 6) Do not open email attachment from people you know, if don't one from them. 7) Ignore Online virus checker, Registry Cleaners, Live Screen Savers etc as they all contain malicious codes attached. 8) turn on your firewall. 9) Keep a reliable copy of all your valuable data on a remote hard drive or CD or an internet FTP location (zipped and password protected). Data you don't keep a copy is the data you don't care for. Research and engineer your self and find more means. Wish you good luck

There may be too many programs running at once or you have a virus or spyware. I recommend you download Internet Explorer 7 and download the yahoo toolbar which fixes spyware problems.

secondly, due to improper shutdowns and inconsistent data and errors. third, due to registry errors . and many more like hardware failure or when your software gets corrupted .. sort of issues like these make your computer vulnerable and fickle to crashes
