Charles Barbier invented a thing called "night writing" as per Napoleon Boneparte's demand for a way for the soliders to communicate at night, but it was too complicated for them to learn. Years later, Louis Braille, a french man identified the problems with the code, modified it to be much simpler to read in a six dot format, and the rest is history!
