This is a hard one for parents.
Personally, I preferred to trust my kids.
I did install web security software (filtering, etc), and I limited their time online. Also, the computer was in my home office, where I could see the screen if i wanted to, and when I wasn't in there, the office was locked.
We discussed safety, not just internet safety, but in general, and included that as part of it. And we had "rules" ... like not giving out personal information without asking Mom, not downloading things, etc. Did they do things they shouldn't have? Probably.
But I felt that unless I had reason to question what was going on ... some evidence that I needed to look closer into things ... that it was more important that I respect their privacy.
Now, this was for older teens, ages 14+.
Also, remember .. if they find out you are reading things, they will do it on their phones instead, or from school, or at a friends house whose parents arent as diligent. Better to keep them at home where the filtering and other safeguards are.

Unacceptable. Whats the point, really? if you have parental control on the net programs on your computer, thats fine. but reading there emails and such, is not right. Because kids will see that behavior from you, and while they hate it, they will subconsciously emulate it, and the first chance they have to do that will be when they start dating, and because you never trusted them, they will have trust issues as well.

Good on you. So you should know what your kids are up to on the net. Hope you've got good parental control software too.
