People have a million different definitions for love, so I offer this one into contention. When I say love, I mean of one person for another. When I see that in play, the associated behaviors are often protective, possessive and loyal, as if they are afraid that what they covet will be destroyed or taken away. What do you think?

OOOOO, very deep I like that. I think so, we become possesive when we want something special to be ours, and ofcourse we fear losing it.Its not good to fear losing love, if its your to keep them be faithful if not them treasure it and learn form that special love.people come into our lives to ultimatley teach us something, your on the right track with your deep self.

I think that if jealousy/possession and the fear of losing the person you think you are in love with come into play, then you are not really in love. Just afriad of being alone. Loyalty, though, should always be in the picture. If you aren't loyal, you couldn't possibly feel true love for that person.

Pure love is a positive. I think it is the person's insecurities that cause the fear, thus not pure love. The bible describes love as:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

this is a negative view of love (i dont mean perjorativeley negative - but you're saying love is the absence of fear [of losing something/one valued] )

so, you also have to say that one must value something/one first before they can fear the loss of it..

so couldn't love also be no more than valuing someone/thing?

Love is first knowing and accepting who and what you are; then it transcends to caring for others and doing good for others without a hint of benefit from every deed.

I'm not affraid. When I love someone I let him/she totaly free.
An old proverb says that if he/she come back he/she realy loves you. It's truth.
Love is to share not to put/set limits ...
