The worst I seen was a "D" and it belong to a McDonald's in Maywood but it has since then brought it's rating up to a "B". I also seen a "D" at this really cool well known place called Johnnie's Broiler in Downey... It was so bad that the County Shut it down till it fixed it's problems... It did open up a week or two later but only to shut down for good, It's now a Used Car Dealership.

I have been on inspections. They are NOT pretty. I was in a K-town restaurant that was rated B at its last inspection but was at the center of a large outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting. During our outbreak inspection (where the restaurant does NOT get a grade), they should have gotten a score of 72 (a "C").

But I live in the SGV, and I eat a lot of Chinese food. I have seen places that have skimmed 70 points. You really have to make an effort to score that badly. I hope to god you never have to see a kitchen with a score that low. If you do, I hope you have a strong gut.

I once ate at a place in Monterey Park, then drove by less than 2 weeks later to find that it was closed. Shudder to think what happened. That was before I got my job.

ADDENDUM FOR LATINO_EN_LA: LA County Environmental Health Services does NOT give "D" ratings. Any restaurant scoring below 70 points (the minimum for a "C") will be shut down immediately.

Uh, those posters who replied didn't read the fine print;it said ONLY restaurants in L.A. and Riverside Counties, not Myrtle Beach or NYC...

Anyway, there was a Foster's Freeze in Glendora(CA) that has lately seen its share of flies that even a flycatcher bag was too full by midafternoon, so I called the restaurant HQ in Arroyo Grande(in San Luis Obispo County, on the central coast) and complained about the failure of the owner to control the pests and other vermin, hence the "C" grade from the L.A. County Health Department(whom I also contacted later that day)...

Soon after the restaurant did improve somewhat, to a "B" grade(where it's been ever since), but I still see flies and ants throughout, but not as many as I saw three years ago...

The food's still good, but the vermin infestation control is so-so...

HTH...

I haven't actually SEEN the letter on the sign, but there were 12 restaurants along the main highway where I live. 7 of them were Chinese places, 3 were Dunkin Donuts and the rest were local dives. They were all shut down in the same two day period after health dept inspections, and they haven't re-opened. This has been years ago.

The worst sign I've seen was a B and the number was 89% or something like that....it was a Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken.

A place called "China Lee: located on Santa Monica Blvd. in a strip mall between Vine and Western had a "B" rating for a long time, then it slipped to a "C". The food was actually very good and the place was always crowded. But I noticed rather well-fed rats running around near their dumpster out near the parking lot on one visit. And their rest room facility inside was best avoided at all costs. Am assuming that it was for employee use also.

C. It was the restuarant in the department store where I worked. The dishwasher was broken and they had hired a girl with "learning disabilities" to help clean the place which she didn't. So The Riv. Co. Health department shut the place down until the washer was fixed, the girl was fired and the place scrubbed from top to bottom.

The resturant hasn't existed for about 14 years now though.

I think that letters aren't given below a "C". The lowest score I ever saw was at a Pizza Hut on National Blvd. -- it was so low, it didn't even get a letter (and it was closed). Years ago, I worked on a TV shoot in L.A.'s Skid Row. Every restaurant I saw there had a "C" (this was before the recent renovation efforts downtown).

I don't remember the name of this restaurant. The food was good. It was a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in Monrovia, on Huntington. The food was GOOD!

Did I say the food was good?

I was there having lunch and the restaurant was pretty crowded. From the kitchen I heard "WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE FAILED?!?!?!"

Everyone looked up and at each other. Then we all continued eating.

I don't know if they are still in business, but their food was GOOD.

I saw a "C" at a restaurant in Alhambra (don't remember the name though).

Here is a great website to check out the ratings before you eat out:
