The answer to that is quite simple.
The USA is an empire along the same lines as the old Russian Empire or the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, that is, most of its territory is contiguous with the original nation state.
When the USA achieved independence from Great Britain it consisted of only thirteen states in the north -east of North America. This is the significance of the thirteen stripes on the . flag.
From that time it aquired more territory by conquest (ethnic cleansing of the native population and wars against Mexico and Canada) or purchase (from France and Russia).
It also,over time, aquired overseas possessions such as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Virgin Islands and Guam.
One of the original states, New York, is always referred to as the Empire State and one of its major buildings is called the Empire State building.
So I think there can be no doubt that the americans are proud of their empire.

Because conveniently the Bristish, the French, Dutch, Spanish, Portugese, Germans were left broke after WW2 to maintain their own empires, someone got to take over that title.
The Americans actually claimed to be anti-imperialists, I almost believe that except for Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines previously and a few more.

Hadn't heard that, but anyone using that phrase obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. If the US is an empire, where are its borders? What conquered countries are living under the US thumb? Germany? Japan? Give me a break.

They are ignorant and lack common sense to understand empires used other countries to get wealthy. The US only exports its wealth and in return gets world rejection. Time We wised up and told the world to bug off and protect itself. Let those who do not like us try getting support from china or France. That would be a real laugh.
