you can buy super mario brothers 3, but it may be hard to find, unless you're on ebay. in any event, SMB3 works only on NES. that's the first style of nintendo there was.
if you buy super mario brothers all stars, SMB3 is included in the pack, and this game works on Super Nintendo (snes)
if you buy super mario brothers 3 advance, you can play the game on gameboy.
---------
there are no adapters that make NES games work on the SNES, there is only an adapter that lets you play GB/GBC games on the SNES.
---------
from the wording in your question, one would be lead to assume that you either have a snes, or recently came into one, so i would
buy super mario all stars, so that you could play super mario 3 on the snes. here's an ebay link for the game - http://search.ebay.com/super-mario-all-stars_W0QQa14Z24222QQalistZa14QQfromZR40QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQgcsZ1135QQpfidZ1413QQpfmodeZ2QQreqtypeZ1QQsacatZQ2d100

The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) is an 8-bit system that came out in the 80s. The original Super Mario Bros. 3 was on the NES.
The SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is a 16-bit system. There is a graphically updated version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for the SNES, part of a game called Super Mario All-Stars (which has Super Mario 1, 2,3 and The Lost Levels).
There's also a port of Super Mario Bros. 3 for the GameBoy Advance.
All versions play pretty much the same, but the GBA and the SNES versions look and sound a bit better. Which one you choose is up to you.

Super Nintendo is SNES. Super Mario All-Stars has Super Mario 1, 2, and 3, and "the lost levels" which is similiar to 1. This game is for the SNES, and it is exactly the same as each of the NES games (except for lost levels) You'll love it!

The SNES is the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES is the Nintendo Entertainment System. The SNES take long, short cartriges on the top of the system. The original NES takes squarer cartriges in the front of the system. the SNES is grey with puple buttons on top. the NES is grey with grey buttons on the front. Super Mario Brothers 3 was for the NES

super mario 3 was only for NES, the old frontloader..as other people said you can buy mario all stars for SNES and play it on there. Also at one time I saw an adapter somewhere that allowed you to play NES and SNES games on N64. Anyone know the name of that?

If you buy it for SNES, buy Super Mario All-Stars, it has almost every version of Mario, aside from the SNES ones like World and stuff, but all the NES versions are on it.
