Some light skinned people will think they are better than darker skinned people, but they are ignorant. They must be thinking back to slavery when dark skinned slaves worked all day outside in the field and the light skinned slaves worked inside as house slaves. But the fact is, we were ALL slaves. I sometimes wish I was a little bit darker. I find being light skinned, I can see all my imperfections and blemishes a lot more. I also have uneven skin tone. I am darker on my face then the rest of my body, which is why I like to sunbathe when I go on holiday. I'm not afraid of the sun like some other black people.

They don't. The few "color struck" individuals you have sadly encountered that feel this way have just been enculturated to think so. They may even feel inferior to you, which is also not good, so don't take any perverse pride in that either.

Here's a true story. I once had a "light skinned" b/f who tried to bait me into such a conversation. It was his contention that only light skinned blacks had accomplished advancements for our race. I reminded him of Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Marcus Garvey to name a few. Then I told him it didn't really matter. He should have known better since he fancied himself to be a black nationalist! As we talked further, I revealed that I had a preference for extremely dark men (I just do) but I didn't let that interfere with choosing him because what's on the inside countsthe most! Guess what? He got angry and revealed that his mother (also light skinned) had the same preference! He was jealous of his darker brother and his dad! See what I mean?

There is a history, both personal and nationally behind all this color division. The closer enslaved people were in color to the "slave masters" the better treatment they got, although the institution of slavery was horrid for everyone involved. BTW:there were never any slaves! Our ancestors were born free, kidnapped and enslaved!

Some continue this practice to this day. Don't let it divide you from people. It has to die out somewhere. Let it begin dying with you. Spread love for all people no matter their "hue" they are all human!

My mother is half Spanish and half Black, and my father is Scotch-Irish.

Throughout my life I have never felt better than anyone because of color of skin. I wasn't raised that way and I believe my father loved the "Black side" of my mother more than the Spanish side. My parents were very fair people and I never heard my mother or father say anything negative towards any race. But, in fact I have received more hate from dark skinned Black females than Caucasian, and all races put together and they almost always prejudge and say what you are saying. It seems those Black females are not being open minded and being racist themselves.

While there are lighter skinned people who erroneously believe they are better than someone who is darker, there are also just as many dark skinned people who automatically dislike lighter skinned people just because of their coloring, and cause problems for that reason only. Some have gone as far as to accuse me of having a weave because my hair is very long. It's ridiculous!

Also, someone wrote earlier that most accomplishments have been achieved by dark skinned individuals, I simply don't believe that. I believe it is more of a balance.

Well in the time of Slavery in America light skinned (biracial African and Anglo) Blacks were treated better than darker skinned Blacks by the Slave Owners (who was possibly their own father). The light skinned slaves lived in the house with the Slave Owner, this was also a weapon to divide the mix slaves and the pure African slaves. These and other tactics were discussed in open forums among Slave Owners. This tradition of discrimination has been passed down from generation to generation. Educate yourself on this subject and find out what is true to you. Look around most of the smartest and wealthiest African Americans throughout history are of darker complexion. So can you really believe they are better you?

believe it or not this is as common in the hispanic comunity, where there are dark skinned, and light skinned, the light feeling they are somewhat better than the dark skinned, if only becuase the dark skinned tend to have more metzo indian facial features and the the light more spnish castellno features. so it boils down to a question of value ( of how one percieves themselves ) in relation to another. if you pay such attention to such things then you be sorely disappointed the rest of your life as you see everyone tends to use the same yardstick. that is on tv the images projected tend to be the lighter in color, the more sucessfull and sought after, and such is a powerful image that in time people want to be that iamge, even if from another race. it's true in spanish soap operas called novelas, where most of the actors portrayed are light skinned if not white, even if it's a peasant being portrayed, they tend to be light skinned spanish / castellians with a touch of make up to make them "look" dark, indeed the peasants have always been dark due to agricultural nature of there work and or usallu working outdoors. telemundo and other spanish channel cater to what the populace wants and those who are the majority want the light skinned hispanics, to some degree they see themselves like that, light skinned and sucessful.

so it can be with the black community where a divide has drawn and those one side will see more prosperity, and sought after by men of all races ( I point towards Tyra Banks as a prime example verse Naomi Campell or Emon ) all three of them pretty, but many seem to want Tyra. you ultimately decide how the future shapes up in terms of marketing patterns and who the advertisers ( and ultimate all media ) potray and seek those to put up in the magazines, tv et all forms of media as being desireable, time will tell weather one day the situation will be the reverse.

It's the same reason that straight hair is preferred over coarser, 'nappy' hair. It's the idea of European skin tone and features as more beautiful and preferred over darker, African-type features and skin tones. Another repercussion of centuries of miscenegation. I took a course on Puerto Rico's own history of miscenegation [Spaniard, indigenous, and African, etc] which was really interesting because it's quite similar to the experiences of Afro-Caribbean peoples and African Americans.

I don't think you are a black person. A black person would never say something like your question on an open forum. I have never thought that I was better than any other black person regardless of their color. I appreciate the color spectrum and beauty of all black people.

That's slavery mentality that's been going on for many years and they just don't know better.
The problem is that you let it bother you ; if you brushed it off as one's life stupidities and not worry about it, you'd be much better off! They want to instill an inferiority complex in you and if you believe their crap, then they won! Don't give them the satisfaction girl....
