I have got to say that you will get what you pay for. I am a plumber and everybody wants to short change the plumber.
What kind of work do you do? Would you short change yourself?Oh I forgot only you can charge regular rate.
Plumbers are in high demand right now.Just like computers. why do P.C companies charge so much?Because they can . So pay up and start crying about the pay. I charge 75.00 an hour.

First things first.
Do you just need a quick service call, to fix a small problem?
A small problem is something like a leaky faucet, etc.

Or do you need a bigger job done, such a replacing a lot of pipes.

If its a small job, then look to the yellow pages, and pick a company with a small add. The big ads attract attention, but they cost a lot of money to have. Who do you think pays for the ads? The customer does.

If its a big job get a least 3 estimates, most companies give free estiamtes for a days or more worths of work. Get at least 3 references and follow up on them. Then throw out the high and low estiamte and take the middle one.

Good luck.

Ouch - good question.
Good plumbers cost because of all the insurance they must carry. You should look for both certified and insured.
My dad was a remodeler. As such he need to have two or three reliable plumbers as subcontractors. Call up some remodelers or contractors.
As a last resort, if you have a home improvement/hardware store nearby, ask them.
