A 14 year old girl is suing myspace because she was raped by a guy she met on here. Why do people think that by blaming the internet that it justifies what they did! I mean come on. Take responsiblity for your own actions! She gave him her phone number and things like that. She knew he was 19 and went out to dinner with him ALONE! And she says she was raped by him. Well, you know you have to be careful. Yeah, I was raped by a guy I met online through a friend but did I blame her or the internet....NO....I blame myself for trusting him....so am I going to sue her or the internet just because it was my fault I met him and all he wanted was sex... NO! I mean I think its your own fault if you post pictures of you in hardly anything. But the parents as well blaming the internet! You know if you think your kids are up to something then block them from doing things online, block them from certain sites. Why do people think that by blaming something or someone else it makes it all right?!

Myspace says that they try and keep underage people safe by not allowing certain things out. But you know you can help prevent some of that by not accepting people who you don't personally know to be on your friend list. I just think parents and people in general need to take responsiblity for their own actions. Stop blaming the internet!
I was raped three years ago and was 18 granted he was 23 but I was in the mindset of okay he said he'd take me out to breakfast so I went and we sat and watched a movie and I said no and he didn't listen. I'm not angry I'm just stating things that I know and I mean I trusted him in saying that we would do this when in what he wanted was totally different. My fiance works for the news that reported the story and everyone at the station was mad because we all have myspace accounts and all my friends agree.

We had a similar incident at school. A black guy and a white girl had sex in the bathroom, they got caught she said it was rape when a group of us that were with them all stated it was consensual. She came up with the idea and he said okay. The fact is her parents didn't like black peopple and when they found out what she had done they told her to say that.

The internet is not a baby sitter. The girl lied about her age to get onto myspace in the first place. Myspace has a section detailing that you're supposed to be careful about who you talk to, and whom you go meeting. The girl and her parents are whiny little crybabies who think that rules don't apply to them and they should be compensated for their own very foolish mistake.

No. Suing anyone on the internet is stupid. There are predators out there that are only looking for things that they can not get through a normal healthy relationship, so they think that they have to try to get children to do it.
Those people need to grow up, and start (and maintain) a relationship with someone that is their own age, and has the same likes/preferences for what to do in their alone time.
The bad thing is that children will try to be rebellious against their parents, and do the opposite thing from what the parent told them to do. Or, on the other hand, the parents pay absolutely no attention to the wants, and attention needs of the child. Thus, the child will post information on the internet, which left unchecked... can lead to some bad things for the child.
It's kinda like telling the kid that the stove is hot to protect them from getting their hand burned. Well... you have to tell your kids that the internet is not to be played around with, and needs a certain degree of responsibility if you are going to use it.... otherwise, the child could get hurt.
I am not saying that this is the situation in every case.
Parents should tell children, and MAKE THEM not put any personal information on the internet. It wouldn't surprise me if these same children that have their name, home phone, age, address, and school on their profiles are the same ones that will eventually get their identities stolen at a later date. Mostly because they were not educated that this is a bad thing, and should not give strangers access to this information.
Anyway,... I do not believe that a corporation can be held responsible for the content that a 3rd party has published in the public realm of the internet. The only responsible parties are the ones involved.... i would not conside myspace as being involved in this, just simply providing a service to people that request it.
that is just about all that i can think of before I start raving... people just need to take responsibility for their actions.

Because they don't want to take responsibility for their own moronic actions...that and there could be a few million bucks in it for them. It's not Myspace that is to blame for the girl's actions, it's her parents for not paying more attention to what she was doing online.Perhaps she should sue them instead.

Dawn, it sounds like you are letting you anger out, That you were raped and you had no revenge for it. As you said in your own words.. " i blame myself for trusting him "
You could and probally still go to the police, maybe you need some closure.. It is never the victims fault, and you were a victim, as was that poor girl,
You need to blame the person who raped you. Because they RAPED You, It isn't yout fault, he is responsible..
You do need help, and i do not say that in a mean way, I can actually see the anger in your writing, you have had no closure.

Sadly, our society encourages such irresponsible, reckless behavior. People harm themselves in one way or another, and decide to blame whatever it is they used to harm themself. And all too often, the system bends over backwards to accomodate them. And we all suffer for it. Because it forces things that are perfectly fine, if used responsibly, to be regulated to a point that is just ridiculous.
