The movie "World Trade Centre" says about twenty. The two Port Authority officers who are the main subject of the film were numbers 18 and 19.

One doesn't really know because the World Trade Center was a place of business and a place for tourists to visit. We know that about 20,000 people were employed there and that many, below where the planes attacked, were able to escape. There was about 45 minutes from the attack to the collapse. What we don't know is how many people were there just visiting, eating in the top floor restaurant or conducting business there. Overall, about 3,000 people died. Many more could have, but managed to escape. I am glad that the number was only around 3,000. If the planes had hit lower portions of the building, the death toll would have been higher because leaa people would have been able to escape.

According to one comment in the movie World Trade Center between 50 and 60 thousand people were the center at the time. If this number is accurate and over 2,700 people died then I'd low ball assume it is a least 43 thousand people.

A lot of people got out before the buildings collapsed, esp. if they were in the floors below where the planes hit.
