Mine did the same (P4-based Celeron 1.6Ghz) until I started elevating the back of the laptop. Many manufacturers build the intake in the bottom and gauge the spacing between the bottom of the laptop and the top of the desk based upon a certain density of surface. Softer surfaces flex, causing restricted airflow, making the fan work harder. Some manufacturers simply don't do a good job. Elevating the back (usually where the intake is) allows for more airflow.

Also, you may want to look into portable laptop surfaces. Many have channels/grooves allowing for better airflow than a flat surface. Several also include fans powered off a USB port that are considerably quieter than the laptop fan. I purchased a USB-powered fan model and have been quite happy with it (about $30). I rarely hear the laptop fan now...only during heavy-processing periods, and can actually hold the laptop on my lap (go figure)!

The fan will run constantly, it is getting rid of heat produced by the CPU, the disk, video card, etc. The only way to stop it is to turn the computer off.

All that said, you can make the fan work less hard if you clean the dust out of the computer.

You can sit the laptop on a cake rack to get it up off the table, that improves airflow. Or your can buy a special stand that blows air up against the bottom of the laptop case.

Are you running Seti, UD, Boinc, or any of the distributed computing projects? They use lots of CPU, and that increases the heat.

maybe you are running high end application on it, like some video games. my laptop does the same thing.
you learn to get used to it, because it cannot be changed.

the only way to not have your fan running so hot is to not run demanding applications.

if it bugs you that much, go buy a desktop, which will be much quieter.

another option for cooling your system is to buy a cooling pad for your laptop to sit on. it may or may not change how fast the fan spins, but it will keep your laptop cooler. cooler=better as far as laptop hardware goes.

try cleaning out the dust bunnies from the cooling vents. Or get a laptop cooler.
