9 times outta 10, if you are casted in a movie as an extra, the wardrobe department will provide clothes for you. To insure that you are properly dressed for that peticular scene. Otherwise, you will get a phone call telling you where to be, what time and what to wear.

Yes, and Congratulations to you..
You can wear whatever you want, but you will have to change clothes according to the period, insofar, as the YEAR production is casting the film...for instance if the Movie is about an 1950's or 1960's ERA then, Wardrobe department on the set will have you fitted accordingly. Sometimes you're told prior to the filming day what to wear or bring if it's a NOW (2000's) film.. Modern time..
The Casting Director or Production Assistant will phone you and tell you.
Your Hair and Make up will fit that ERA also. If it's today's time they'll say, "Come Hair and Make up ready. (Do your own).
It's nothing like having them put you in the chair and work on you together, doing your hair and make up though. You're going to love it.
It's a lot of FUN and on some Movie sets, the food is really good.
Be careful if you're watching your weight some Movie sets have menus consisting of everything you've ever eaten in your life plus some. All Good. Deserts...out of this world.
Have Fun.

It depends on the movie.
I was an extra in the Outsiders and I dressed like I was going out on a date.

They will give you what they want you to wear and may even have a Choreographer to show you where to sit, walk or stand.

The casting agency will tell you the parameters of your wardrobe, i.e. whether it's sporty, dressy, casual, etc.
