I have to write an essay on Smoking Regulations all from common knowledge. Where do I start? Just what is 'common knowledge'? I need help with coming up with an Introduction most of all.

Common knowledge means that you have to write the essay with the knowledge that you already have at this moment in time.

Here is my tip in writing the essay: Try to structure the essay into bite-size portions so that you can focus you energy in a comprehensive yet clear flow of information.

For example, you can say your introduction on why you are writing it, then move on to a general description on what smoking regulations is. Then try to get into more details by giving your opinions on specific regulations. Give your insights and opinions on the topic. Then end the essay by summarizing what you wrote in the first few paragraphs.

"Common knowledge" whether we realize it or not is information that has been programmed into us in various ways whether we are conscious of it or not - signs, tv, radio, word-of-mouth; written procedures and rules. We are all aware of smoking regulations because we've all seen "No smoking" signs; seen ads on tv about smoking being bad for us or the dangers of second-hand smoke, which has prompted restaurants, bars and airports to have no smoking policies except in designated places; workplaces have instituted smoke free buildings so that people have to smoke outside and we see that and realize that smokers can't light up in buildings. There are no ashtrays in smoke free places. Even car makers are opting not to put cigarette lighters in their cars unless specified. I bought an Infiniti that came standard with no lighter but it did have the plug so I could plug in my phone power adapter.

Anyway, all of these things add up to "common knowledge" about where we can and can't smoke - smoking regulations.
