The best explanation of James Frey are reviews written by an expat book reviewer named John Dolan. Spot ON! Read his reviews instead of reading the books, don't waste your money. My six year old writes better than Frey.

He did go to rehab. A lot of the things that led up to the rehab wasn't true, like him being the "bad guy" he portrayed himself to be and he was never in jail or prison, but only got arrested and was held for a few hours....that type of thing. The part about the dentist was exaggerated.

Frey is a fraud. His work is fiction and you can't believe anything he says. I don't want to guess what parts are true and what are false and Frey has shown that you can't believe him so I give nothing he writes any credence. He wanted money and he suckered Oprah into helping him achieve that.

the good parts are all lies, his story wasn't nearly as exciting in reality. he's a fraud. and actually the part about the no pain killer root canals in the dentist was completely false, the man anesthetic for oral numbing is lidocaine, a non addictive non narcotic, they would have gave it to him.

Gawd! please get off this guy's back! The public humiliation they put this guy through was abominable. After all, he did write the book under the genre, "Memoir", (as he remembered it). Give the guy a break, he hurt no one.
