would you rather have him mad or someday dead (if he's too screwed up to cut himself, what's stopping him him from doing something worse someday)?
who cares if he gets mad. tell his folks.

Oddly, most of the people I've met who cut themselves are female.
I know we can't avoid this being a public forum, but personally I'd not tell anyone.
I think the movie The Secretary showed me more about the world of cutting than any other. It doesn't seem suicidal -- it seems more like a release for inner pain.
And ... I am in no way an expert! But, respecting one's wishes is best when you just simply do not understand the motive and has to be the most solid support you can give.

He needs to get into therapy right away and you do need to tell someone. Part of loving & caring about someone is doing the right thing for them, whether they are upset or not. I have a relative that did this and she is borderline bi-polar, there is medication for it. She now is happier & a stable person...PLEASE tell someone who can help right away. My relatives situation was cutting, depression, & attempts at suicide. You don't want the last to occur....love him & urge him to seek a professional that can enable his life to become the opposite of what it is right now.
It shouldn't matter if his Dad is a cop or not.......he must love his son! Cops are there to help others...not just punish.

Dont worry, you dont have to tell anyone. They will all find out when he cuts himself too deep. Then you wont have to worry about him being mad (or happy, or anxious, or upset because he'll be dead)

This is a pschyological disorder and he needs help. Let him get mad. If you care about him you will get him some help. Cutters dont stop on their own.

I think you should tell his parents or someone because if you don't than your not helping the situation. He deserves to get the help he needs. If you don't say anything something worse could happen like he could kill himself and you'd think to yourself that you could've done something about it. Please tell someone for the sake of his safety.

You would more mad at yourself if something bad happens to him and you could have prevented it.

get him help! He will be mad at you for it at first but he will get the help he needs and deserves

If you are truely his/her friend, you need to tell someone. He needs help before he takes it too far
