mmmm, not so much.....

edit:
ok (person I don't know) since i think YOU LIVE IN BERKELEY (just a hunch, ya know) why don't you go outside and look at the 9 million cops on the street.
and then there was the murder last week and the armed robberies and beatiful-family-oriented-happy day-sunshine-Oakland right next door.

satisfactory????

again, this is just a hunch....

edit2:
in the whole bay area??? are you stupid??? Have you been to Marin f*ck*ng county son??????

whoever told you this has never been in berkeley long enough to make that statement. i lived in the bay area, and went to berkeley for college and grad school, and i can tell you that berkeley is nowhere near being the safest city in the bay area. not to say that it is the worst or most unsafe city, but it is not marin (where it is quite safe).

recently, the city of berkeley and the UC Berkeley police have beefed up their night patrol (foot) near campus, to help curb down the crime that's going on. seeing lots of peace officers walking around does not necessarily give me the idea of a "safe neighborhood."

In a word, no. The two subway stations are both pretty seedy at night, and the main streets attract the homeless. There's some residual street crime from nearby Oakland, as well as a good deal of petty crime courtesy of the out of control university fraternities.

Berkeley is certain no where near being the safest city in the Bay Area (my guess is that would be a little wealthy suburb like Danville or Tiburon). Although it certainly isn't the most dangerous either.

I lived there for 5 years. Night time was cool especially after CAL won football games. I never had an issue with being safe. Berkeley also had some of the best looking girls from the PAC 10.

Listen to SFdude. There are many safer places than Berkeley in the Bay Area. And a few more dangerous ones.

I used to live in Berkeley Hills near Kensington. It used to be safe, not anymore. A lot of crimes such as auto theft and vandalism happens. I think the area is now in that shape because before, it used to be only more of the professional types and elderly people who live there. Now, there are younger families who moved in because it's so "hip" to live there.

im pretty sure bart only runs till midnight or just after midnight... and if u r worried about safety just sit in the first car where the driver/operator is. ive never had any incident on bart at night. once i saw a guy masterbating lol. so if ur gonna stay out past midnight i dont think the bart runs that late. check the schedule at bart.gov. but ya its safe. also i dont know what u mean by taxis arent reliable? u will always find a taxi... but some of them prolly dont wanna drive to berkely. u could call a cab company to verify if they can send u a taxi that will for sure take to to berekly.

No! that's no where near the truth!
If you look at the South Side (near Sproul Plaza), you will see A LOT of homeless men. You will notice how severe the problem is whenever you walk nearby that park (the one on haste and bowldin).
As many other people have said, you should have look at Marin county, lol!
