No the government exists to protect the people not to take care of them, that is their own responsibility. And if the government is taking care of you, you become its slave.
To be your own person, you need to BE your own person.

It depends what the people want. In Scandinavia, the people there have health insurance. In America, supposedly the richest country in the world, 50 million + don't have health insurance.

In this time of superflus & another possible global pandemic, it might behoove the USA to rethink this question. Life is short; corporations are cutting health insurance out of benefits. Who wants to work their whole life for companies that don't want to give them medical insurance?

The problem is that national health insurance is seen as Socialism. However without it, the USA will continue to spiral downward into a 3rd world country.

Both Democrats & Republicans should be worried. I'm not sure they will be able to agree on this. Either way, corrupt people always seem to profit...while the masses suffer.

Depends what kind of government you want.

In a pure capitalism (which is actually a form of economy that has nothing to do with the form of government) everyone would be on their own to provide what they wanted, be it housing, healthcare, food. The only taxes that would be collected would go to support purely public goods, things that benefit everyone regardless of who pays for them. For example a standing military protects everyone in the country, regardless of who in that country pays for it, so it makes sense to have everyone pay a little for it.

If however, you want a socialist government, then it is the responsibility of the government to provide healthcare.

Of course there are pros and cons to either system. A socialist system makes everyone more economically equal, but a capitalist system lets you become richer...or poorer, depending on your luck.

it should be, my ex works in a steel factory, inhaling all the bad stuff and they can't even give him decent health coverage, it may not be the governments job to provide it, but they should get a grip on the job market and make them provide coverage at an affordable cost to employees, this is why so many medical bills often go unpaid, this is why people use medicaid because healthcare isn't provided or isn't approved.

In a government that is run by the people for the people these people are suppose to have self determination. If they so decide they want it then no health insurance company out for profit should be able to deny the government itself from this choice.

Of course the government is duty bound to provide health care to it's people. Why ? If not what is the government for ? To collect taxes and spend it on war and arms alone! Government has to undertake welfare functions also !
