Why are you moving to LA? I know you have a good reason, but is it real? Can you have what you think you'll have in LA - where you are now, closer to support and family.
You understand you'll be using long distance phone calls when you move. $$
You have a job there? $$
You have a college dorm/room and classes there?
You have money in the bank for this trip?$$ A lot of money?$$
You have looked in the web sites for apartments and how much it cost to live there? $$$
I suggest a plan and timetable. And an emergency escape account $$ - if things do not work out - if they work out and your happy - then spend the money on a vacation and party! :)
I lived in San Diego - man it's $$$$$!
Check craigslist for stuff.
There are good people and bad people here.
WAIT ************************
Do you mean LA as in California or the state?
Ha, I know nothing about the state - good luck, use my suggestions only for the state, Ha, man which direction are you going?

I like LA. I am from Chicago and I live in Florida.

The people are cool by in large. It is crowded, polluted and can be dirty in areas.

The cost of living is very high, the traffic is bad. But you can make good money, there are lots of opportunites.
There are oodles and oodles of things to do in LA. All types of people from all over, good food. I like it.
If you want to move there, check it out first. Look at jobs, apartments, etc then make up your mind.

Hey c'mon over!!! The weather is nice, people are tanned and it only takes you 10 hours to go 15 miles down the road. So, hell yeah!! Come to Southern California. That way, that's one less car in Northern California where I live. :)
