A salt is an ionic compound made up of a metal cation (+) and a non-metal anion (-).
There are many types of salts, the best known of which is "table salt", or Sodium Chloride (NaCl).
Sodium Chloride is made up of a Na+ ion and Cl- ion which are ionically bonded together.
An element is a pure substance which is only made up one one type of atom, not multiply types such as in the case of NaCl.
Sodium (Na) by itself is an element. Chlorine by itself (Cl) is an element, but together they form an ionic compound.
