Canada does NOT have "of America" in it's name.
The United States of America is where the states are.
Mexico also does NOT have the phrase "of America" in it's name. They are the United Mexican States; Estados Unidos Mexicanos in spanish. So of the three countries we the USA have the phrase "of America" as PART of the written and world wide accepted name of our country.
I had this conversation with my wife (Costa Rican), and it is old now. Luckily she was kidding - your not! .
I was NOT present when the name was picked - but how is it wrong in any way? The united states are located in America, starting from the original thirteen - expanding to the 50 we have today.
"... why dont u say im proud to be an united states citizen?" -- WE DO, people do? why would they not?.
Also AMERICA IS THE HOME TO EVERY RACE AND CREED AND COLOR - meaning your first question: "why do white people say "im an american"?" Shows a lack of respect for the people of your country.
America is not the home of just white people, YOU MUST KNOW THIS!!!! IT"S 2006!!! LOOK AROUND!!

Please tell me this is a joke? Who put you up to this? First let me rip you apart piece by piece... Uhhh heemmmm

1) All colors of people say they are "American". White people are Americans, brown people are Americans, black, yellow, red... we are all Americans if we are legal US citizens. If a person is Mexican then of course they can’t be an American, otherwise they would be calling themselves an American and would be legal US citizens. Same goes for French, Australian, British, Japanese, etc.

2) When you ARE a UNITED STATES citizen. America is the continent that you live in, that’s why it's called the United States of America. I just wanted to fix your first couple of sentences, as it was bothering me.

3) Look up America in the dictionary some day. I will give you the low down on what it says in case you fail to look it up yourself. America = The United States. The word you are thinking of when you refer to Canada and Central America and South America is called the Americas. See the "s" appended to the end... gives it a different meaning.

4) The continent that you are referring to is called NORTH America. Not America. Just as there is a SOUTH America. See how that whole word added to the front gives it a different meaning. Please use them. There is not a continent called America, as America refers to only the United States.

5) When was the last time you heard a Mexican say..."I’m proud to be a Mexican citizen"? When was the last time you heard a Canadian say "I’m proud to be a Canadian citizen"? I doubt you ever have. What do they say instead....I will tell you "I’m proud to be a Mexican" "I’m proud to be a Canadian". So with that understanding you can see why I am
PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!!!

American = Legal U.S. Citizen. Nuff said.

Stop trying to make a point when you have none.

Thanks for the question… I enjoyed answering it.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that only "white" Americans address themselves as Americans. How should I address myself then. I am an "United States of American" that sound kind of weird. Ok, so maybe "Citizen of the United States" that sound a little pretentious. Being one of those rare countries that did not bond itself to a national identity at it's conception. Within our country we can refer ourselves by our state identity, (I am an Oregonian...From the state of Oregon). And yes each state has a different identity. Ask any "United States of American" if there is a difference between the people in California, Alabama, Maine, and North Dakota.
We, well the vast majority of us, do not have a thousand years of history to bind our continents. We can't be be European or Asian or African because we ALL immigrated from these places in one way or another (yes some by force).
If I were to refer to my self as a one who belongs to a Continent I would call my self NOT and American, but a North American. But it all just semantics isn't, just like your question.

I call myself an American because I was born in California..which is in AMERICA. I could also call myself a North American, so could the Canadians and Mexicans you speak of...why? Because we're on the North American continent...not the American continent. Where did you learn your geography? Get it together! Hell, I went to school in Kentucky and I still know that the continent I live on is NORTH AMERICA.

I laughed my balls off reading this question, white people look so stupid saying their race is american, when american is not even a race, white people have become so stupid that they are getting race mixed up with location.

no black or hispanic person calls themselves and american and the china man thinks america is a joke, they only do it when white people are around maybe a few times because they know white people are cry babies who will pull the race card if you don't worship their imperialistic flag. didn't you see all those mexicans in california and arizona waving the MEXICAN flag and chanting 'it's our country not yours' when they had that big immigration march?

excellent question.

For the same reason an Asian person would say they are Asian or a person from Europe is a European. Everyone on this continent is an American. whys it gotta be about race all the time? Are you a racist Mexican?

Canadians are Canadians and Mexicans are Mexican - they are not Americans in the sense of nationality.

Because it's easier said. Some says he/she is a US Citizen.

Well, it's a common term like I say, I'm proud to be an American rather then saying, I'm proud to be a US citizen. It sounds kinda awkward.

white people dont just say it. all americans do.

the word america captures what the usa is about.

america is a diverse continent, actually two north and south. our country the usa is also diverse in in: race, culture, beliefs, etc. we can say it because it is true. more than canada and our southern brother and sisters.
