Essentially the plasma membrane serve to protect the cell internal environment from the external environment, the plasma membrane also serve to facialite reactions, i.e food particles and waste material go in or out and also to serve to act as a barrier or enclose chemical reactions and subtrates: so that enzymes don't go out and cause an unstopable chain of reaction. If im not mistaken the nucleus also have a plasma membrane and it act as a gate which material can go in and which can't, that's an ovely simplistic explanation..
