I'm just wondering why there's so many people walking on the streets of downtown New York, like Manhattan where i went sometime ago, and none of them ever say 'hi' or 'how you doin'.' Is there a story behind this? I feel like i'm walking in the streets of New York surrounded by ghosts.

theres no time for chit chat, everyone down there are on a deadline of some sort, either your late to work, meeting, lunch its all about getting to where you have to be just in time...so there is no time to wave or even crack a smile..

When your from Mississppi and you only see 3 people a day then you can say hi to everyone. When your from an island that house 21 million if you include the surrounding areas saying hi to everyone would get a bit annoying don't you think.

I went to New York and stayed at a hotel in downtown Manhattan. There were people wall to wall day and night and I could hardly walk, there were so many people. And you think they should stop and talk to strangers?????????????

Because it's too busy. Too many people in one place. Take a quiet day like Sunday or Tuesday and you'll see some people saying hi.

if u are a true new yorker u would understand that its not rudeness its just how the city is. I bet if u ask for directions or how to get somewhere u will see newyorkerss are veryfriendly its a fast pace city. people are trying to do things and go places u have u understand it in order to feel what I'm saying. only a person who knows NY will understand where im coming from

New Yorkers are very nice, it's just that we're really busy making this country run and haven't got time to chat with tourists.

Maybe it's because you're all strangers...do you go up to random people ask ask them how they are? I should hope not because we'd all think that you're insane...

But if you're really upset by this, tell me what you look like and I'll say "Hi, how are you?" to everyone who looks like you downtown.

they have stuff to do and places to go. dont take it personally. most people who live in the city walk everywhere so treat like walking on the sidewalk as driving. you dont stop your car and say hello to the car next to you...plus theres so many people you cant say hi to them all

Because they are all too busy looking after themselves. You could always make the first move, like saying good morning, afternoon or night.
