If it makes you uncomfortable - tell her that. She works for you!!!!!
You have rights as a patient.
If she still tries to take your temp that way - I would definitely switch doctors.

On a 13 year old? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. It doesn't really matter if it's an old-fashioned doctor. A 13 year old is a young adult. At that age, they are so self conscious about everything. In fact, where I work, we actually take that into account and try our best not to invade the patients personal space if at all possible. You need to get rid of that doc and find a new one. RIGHT AWAY!

Personally, no I do not think it is normal.........and not for a minute would I believe that is the only kind of thermometers. One reason doctors use rectal thermometers is for accuracy and younger children can't hold a thermometer in their mouth or even under arm for any length of time. I would truly be concerned. I wouldn't see that doctor any longer.

Most docs use an electronic thermometer that goes into the ear.

Thermometers of any sort are not difficult to obtain. Do you really believe her when she says that she only has rectal thermometers?

How humiliating this must be for your poor daughter.
I would never take my daughter there. Something is definitely wrong there.

I am a CMA and some doctors like to do things the old fashioned way. Rectal is the most accurate but if you are not sick with the flu or a fever it seems totally unnecessary. But they are the big kings of their castles and some doctors are so arrogant so let them have their way. It certainly can't hurt.

If you are bothered by the doctor taking your temperature this way, find another doctor. It is the most accurate method of taking a body temp correctly. I do not understand why she would not have an oral thermometer available also.

If it's annoying you or your child, then I think you had better ask her to get another kind of thermometer. With the professional fee she gets I'm sure she can very well afford to buy all the other types of thermometers =)

No - but she should get with the times. That's weird to just have rectal thermometers.

No, this is not at all appropriate. This doctor needs to get with the 21st Century and try an digital thermometer, for heaven's sake!

Not giving medical advice here, but i have learned in school (going to school for something medical) that a rectal temp shouldnt be taken, unless absolutely necessary. You could of had it taken orally, axillary, or on the tympanic membrane. Sounds wierd........

If you want to get away from this, tell her you have concerns about getting a perforated bowel and request she take either an oral or axillary (armpit) temperature. As the patient, you do have the right to discuss all of your treatment options with your doctor.
