You won't mess it up either way.
Are you trying to adjust your valves or find top dead center on cylinder #1 to remove the distributor or something?
The only engines that I know of that "naturally" turn counter-clockwise while running are Honda/Acuras.
Again, exactly what are you trying to do? If you are trying to find to dead center on #1 remove the spark plug and put a screwdriver or something else that will not break down in the spark plug hole.
Keep turning the engine until the screwdriver is pushed out. The engine will then be at top dead center or 180 degrees out from TDC. Either way you should be able to replace the distributor. Just pay attention to what you are doing. Ensure that you are on Top Dead Center for firing the #1 cylinder.

If you need to ask, you shouldn't do it, as far as i know the only engines that go counter clockwise are Honda's, turn it clockwise, ps don't use a ratchet with 1/4 " drive, use a johnson bar

Turn it clockwise.
(Even if you rotate it backwards, you won't damage anything. About all you MIGHT do is loosen the bolt in the nose of the crankshaft, and you will know it if you do, just tighten it up again.)
