To a new rented house that has off white carpets or cream in colour carpets. I told my husband that anybody that came would have to wear clean white sox when they came inside I was going to have a box of white sox next the door and each time either a family member or a visitor would come they would have to put the sox on first. He told me I am been a bit silly but keeping the carpets clean is a high thing for me. We have no choice as we have to move from this house and is the only house in the area that is large enough for our family and that we can afford. If this is silly then how else could I keep the carpets looking nice all of the time.

you could just ask people to kindly remove their shoes, I mean still have the sox box if they want them but, I think if they just take off their shoes that should help. You could get runners and area rugs for major traffic areas but that could look tacky. Vacuum frequently and find a Host carpet guy in your area, they clean without getting the carpet wet, which is bad for the backing and could help mold and mildew breed in the padding.

Vacuum the carpet walkways every other day. That will keep the carpets looking nice. I think a box of white socks is going a little too far myself. My mom makes family members take off their shoes when entering the house. She didn't do this when all the kids were growing up, but she does nowadays. I've never really gotten used to it.

Don't expect much company if they have to take their shoes off and put on sox when they come to see you.

Why don't you get a carpet cleaner from Wal Mart and clean it every couple of months. Surely the landlord doesn't expect you to keep the carpet spotless with a family, if he/she does then he/she should have put a different color of carpet in the house.

a little bit extreme. --myself, I would be offended if I came to your house & was made to take off my socks & put on yours.--I would never go back. I dunno--plastic runners for the carpets (I know they aren't attractive, but they do work) maybe those disposable paper hospital slippers wouldn't be as offensive --maybe sillier i dunno. I have never really fretted over my carpets
