In my expereince, the people I've come across who'd I'd say were highly intelligent usually weren't the happiest people. Often, they felt a bit misunderstood and were very sensitive, which made their feelings get hurt easily.

maybe for some people it's:

as intelligence goes up, awareness and realisation go up.
as realisation and awareness go up, disappointment and hopelessness go up
as disappointment and hopelessness go up, happiness goes down.

maybe it shouldn't.
but maybe it does.

I would say that ignorant people have a happiness that doesn't last or is very temporary. i.e. people who get happy when they have a lot of money or nice cars, power, social status, etc. They are only happy when they get what they want.

I think when you say "highly intelligent" you mean people who are more aware or more conscious. They probably seem less happy because they either have a lot going on in their minds or because they know the truth about how the world really is. Or both. .Or maybe they feel lonely because they are surrounded by so many ignorant people on a daily basis and they can't relate.

Also it kind of has to do with the person. Some people are just pessimistic and negative while some people aren't.

Ignorance is bliss only when someone else is there to care for us !
Intelligence does present a problem, of doing what is needed in the situation, instead of enjoying the carefree bliss !
But, happiness is not reduced by intelligence, it is reduced by expectation that arises out of intelligent analysis of mind !
True intelligence is in deep acceptance of the situation, which releases a person from expectations from life, and gives the freedom of action and the joy from ability to act without worry about the results !

I think you must be very intelligent. Yes, intelligent people are often misunderstood, whether or not their feelings are often hurt, I don't know. That has not been my experience IQ 98.
The poor hurt and so cherish happiness. This can come from a greater reason to share, fewer reasons to worry, and as a palative for their pain.

Yes. Ignorance is bliss because you can hide from the painful truth of life that life is suffering. So yes itelligence and feeling misunderstood and being sensitive can cause more unhappiness, but also more awareness. With awareness could it be the happiness felt is more real and authentic?

That seems to be the stereotype enforced by the media. My favorite is the episode of the Simpson's that is sort of a spoof on flowers for Algeron. The super intelligent Homer Simpson is miserable and resorts to lobotomizing himself by putting crayons up his nose.
Still I don't think most intelligent people would chose to be dumb. Happiness might very well depend on the amount of serotonin available in your' noggin.
So do not believe what they tell you. Most stereotypes are BS. If everybody was busy improving on their intelligence or seeking self improvement who would watch TV.?

It's kinda true that the frog in the well is the happiest when he doesn't see the reality of how harsh this world we live in is and is contented with his own small world

The happiest people are probably the foolish people and simple minded people who just couldn't care less about how people perceive them.

Look into Siddhartha Gautama aka Buddha.
Happiness is in your surroundings. ;-)
You don't need to be Buddhist just know that suffering is natural and to live life is great and wonderful no matter what. Knowledge is a great and wonderful gift. With it comes power. It is much easier finding a good job with brain power.

Intelligence isn't always the answer.
In every relationship, whether parent, child, wife, sister, best friend, boyfriend, hubby, wife etc...
I live by the following quote: "Would you rather be Right or Be Happy? "
This seems stupid but believe me it works EVERY TIME!

Good Luck!
