I was asleep when the planes hit the World Trade Centre and didn't get up until about 10 AM. Out of habit I turned on the radio to listen to the news, and the station I had it tuned to, CFRA here in Ottawa, is a CNN affiliate. I was surprised at first that they were relaying CNN coverage, which they don't normally do unless it's a really big story. Soon it became clear: the towers had been hit. Shortly afterward, one of our talk show hosts, Steve Madely, who was "hosting" the relay, said, "Oh my God." The south tower had just fallen.

I rushed downstairs and joined my parents in being glued to CNN for the better part of the day, and I had never ever felt so helpless in my life. I had a girlfriend in Connecticut at the time, and as a result I'd come to consider America as sort of a home away from home. This was her people, her country that was being attacked, and in a way, by extension, so was mine.

I had tons of questions going through my mind. How long was Manhattan going to be shut down? When I travel, I usually go Greyhound, and visiting my ex was no exception, so how was Greyhound affected by this? My ex was scheduled to go into Manhattan for surgery a couple of weeks after the attacks--to what extent would the need for Manhattan hospitals to set up triage centres affect her ability to even get admitted? And on and on.

Aside from watching the second tower fall, there's one heartwrenching moment from later that day that I'll never forget. I saw Paula Zahn interviewing people who were frantically searching for loved ones feared killed in the collapse of the towers. Their grief and anguish was getting to her, and as she was wrapping up her report, she was near tears. I wished I could just reach on over through the TV set and give her a hug and say, "Hang in there." When she passed the mike back to her anchor, he said for our benefit, "In this business we in the media are trained to be indifferent, but we're not inhuman."

I was sitting in a health class in the 8th Grade! My teacher told us that a plane had hit the Twin Towers and we watched CNN for the rest of the time. But after the class was over the Principle told us that we weren't allowed to watch tv for the rest of the day at school so that the students wouldn't freak out.

I was riding my bike up to the nearby grocery store on a beautiful September morning. One of my neighbors called to me and asked me if I know what had happened.

A little bit later, I turned on the T.V. to see what he was talking about. The impact really hit hard when the second tower was hit and fell, the Pentagon was attacked, the crash of the plane in PA.
So much, so fast.....It was unbelievable. We felt vulnerable and people had been destroyed, people were panicking and wondering about their loved ones whereabouts and what we come next.... suffering and surprise and anguish hovered over us.

It reminds me somewhat of the day that President Kennedy was shot. Most people know the exact location when they heard of this horrible news...even if they were little children.

I was home, I'm in Europe so it was 3pm here, turned on CNN just after the second plane hit.

But I know someone who was on a plane from Switzerland to somewhere in the US...nope, back to Zurich! I didn't know her at the time but she had been in the German class I had that night (I joined after she left) so especially her two buddies in the class were completely freaked out!

At home with the flu. I was asleep and my husband called to tell me about the first airplane. I turned on the TV when the second plane hit.

By the way Chazerai, nice going.

I was in school at the time. I walked into class late and everyone was crowed around the TV. I had no idea what was going on until my friend told me. Later on that day, when my parents got home, we called friends and family in New York, where we're origionally from, and our friends in Washington D.C.

I was in a motel in New Jersey with my girlfriend and we were busy not watching TV. I was supposed to be at my job in Tower 2.

At 11:00 I turned on my cell and almost immediately, I received a frantic call from my wife.

She asked me where I was was I OK? I told her, "I am fine and in my office".

I am now a lucky but also a divorced man.

I was at McDonald's before work, eating a cold sourdough sandwich for breakfast. I showed up, and someone told me that a plane flew into one of the towers.
