I read recently in the New York Times that the current national average is 6-7. Students who are aiming for Tier 1 schools often apply to 10 or more.
When I was applying to colleges (decades ago), I applied to 7. (Five aspirational schools and two safe schools.) I was accepted everywhere, got great financial aid from every institution, and chose my "dream college."
And yes, that's very expensive to do.

It depends on your credentials and the selectivity of the program (not just the school but the major field as well). Some have suggested one apply to 2 schools that you might have a slight chance to get in, 2 schools you have a good shot, and 2 schools you definitely would be accepted at. For me, I applied to 2 undergrad, 1 master's and 4 doctoral programs. It takes time and money to apply to schools, so choose wisely. Plus you don't want to annoy your references.

About three or so... I applied to my safety school (knew I would get in for sure), a backup (just in case the safety didn't go through), and a stretch school (one that I might get into, but maybe not). It also depends on the money too cause it costs about $50-60 an application nowadays, depending on the college. Good luck.

a guidance counsellor once advised me to apply to one or two colleges which you would love to get into but know you might not, just to take a chance, about 2 to 3 colleges you know you can get into for sure and then another 2 you wouldn't mind going to if all else fails.

I think 5 or 6, just to give yourself options and see who offers the most scholarship money.
