It's to separate us and make us sound less American. It's done with all the minority groups. African-American, Asian-American, Arab-American is a newer one (they used to call them white unless their skin was too dark then they were hispanic ha!) Hispanics don't even get an American, they're just Hispanic. It all sucks and is just subtle evidence of ignorance and systemic racism lingering in this country.

Just return the favor and call all white people Anglo-Americans, no that's too easy, let's call them Euro-Americans yep their ancestors came from Europe so they are hereby labeled Euro-Americans (that forever ties them to their beloved France hehe).

OK, I'm just generalizing picking on white folk with this one. No hate in my heart I promise. My daddy is white (admittedly from the Bahamas which is different, but I don't have anything against white Americans, just the racist ones).

Such as other peoples nationalities connected them to a land...

Irish=Ireland
Italian=Italy
Chinese=China
Black=????

Therefore they wanted a label that would connect them to their land of origin, which was Africa. You have to examine the social and political climate in the US at the time that the term African American was created. You may feel that you cant relate to that today, because you dont feel connected to that land anymore. But at the time, the people were looking for something to connect themselves to...

I'll just call you American if that makes you happier. It works for me. On the other hand there's absolutely nothing wrong with being aware and proud of your roots!!!
