I'm pretty sure it's a country. If you need the info and obviously have Internet access, wouldn't it be a better use of your time to look that up on the Internet? Then you won't run the risk of getting someone's third-hand opinion. Start with Google, and type in something like "general information Jamaica." It'll be a start and you'll get a list of places you can look for the info.

Jamaica is an independent country since 1962.
it is the third largest island in the greater antilles area of the caribbean and also the third largest english speaking country in terms of population in the "New World" after Canada and the USA.
