is ceramic or metalic brake pads any good? both performance wise and for longevity?

Ceramic is top of the line and to be preferred over all others. Better stopping, and longer lasting, less heat fade. ONLY down side is that they are a bit hard on the rotors. As a general rule, much quieter as well.
The NEXT best is the metallic, and they do a pretty fair job on most applications.
Organic is the lowest acceptable level, and for SOME applications are acceptable, though they will not endure much abuse or heavy use.

Metalic pads are race bred and really haul down from speed, though they tend to squeel and eat rotors with abandon.
