There was a book once upon a time "How to Win Friends and Influence People" (I forget the author - even though he was famous) One bit of advice that was given and that stuck with me is that people like to talk about themselves and what they find interesting. So one technique to conversation is to discover what a person's hot topic is and talk about that. Another bit of advice was try to memorize people's names because it impresses people when you call them by name.
